The organization adopts these children financially, with the help of funding from abroad. Every adopted child is sent to school. The organization will take care of the school fee, books, uniforms, shoes and other educational materials. Because the children are most found on the streets working for their own upkeep, S.K.E.P. compensates these children by giving them each a small amount of money per month. The money is meant for food. Health care is also provided for each sponsored child. The children live with grandparent(s) or host families, they don’t live on the street anymore. Also entertainment activities are organized once in a while to boost the children’s morals.
From our research the women contribute over 60% to the child upkeep. This is so because most men in the northern part of ghana are married to more than one wife. They have several children and don’t really have time for an individual kid. They struggle to provide two square meal a day and really doesn’t have much time for the kids. It is the mother who is close to the child, they are the first to know when the kid is sick, have no clothing, has eaten enough and happy. Credit of children goes to the father whiles discredit goes to the mum.
Most mothers wish to see their kids in school or becomes successful, they have the will but lack the means or resources to support them. Due to this reason the organization of S.K.E.P start a new project which geared at building the capacity of single mothers and deprive women. This capacity building project is done by organizing workshop for the women, giving them special training on trade, and boosting their egos. This project try to bring out the potentials of these women.
During this workshops the women are educated on their rights, importance of education, health and sanitation and principles of economics and home management.
At the end of every workshop each participating woman is given a non interest loan for one and half year repayment period. These repayments are don’t in the bank. Each sponsored woman will get a bank accounts. The loan will be repaid in the bank. This is to enable the women learn more about bank transactions. At the end of the repayment period the organization helps the women to assess loans from the bank and the money paid back will then go back to different group of women. The organization also do monitoring and evaluation to see how the women are doing with their business.
The main reason of these project is to give responsibility of the child education back to the mother or family. Most women push their kids to the streets to work because they are unemployed and this self employed program will help the mother cater for the kid upkeep and education.
The organization of S.K.E.P recruit volunteers and intern to help these women and children who has given up hope. Volunteers organize educational programs for the women. They are learn to read and write and say few words in English. We also recruit volunteers to help these women and their communities on family planning, usage of contraceptive, preventive on sexual transmitted disease and human rights. Volunteers working with these local women are expose to the indigenous Ghanaian culture.
With 20euros per month you can support a child education, healthcare and food. There is also an alternative where you support one women with the capacity building project which cost 400 Euros. With this amount a woman will undergo training and have a loan for one and have year. this money after payment will be transfer to another woman. The organization is targeting close to 1000 women by 20014. If each of these women has a least of three kids your 400 Euros will not be able support three kids and the mother but several other children and mothers and makes them self employed.
Volunteers with special skills in handling children who have learning problems, and social problems are also taken. They help our kids who pass through a lot of emotional trauma and depression.
